Drones are fun – everyone knows that! But there are some important things you need to be aware of before you take to the sky in your fabulous new drone. Whether you are a simple hobbyist or a seasoned professional here are some top tips to ensure you stay safe and legal when you take off.
Don’t Get High!
The Air Navigation Order (ANO) introduced a new height restriction, limiting the heights drones in the UK are allowed to fly. It is against the law to fly a drone higher than 120m (400ft) anywhere in the UK.
But be careful! Many manufactures and sellers advertise the ability to reach above these heights, despite knowing full well that it is against the law to do so. Don’t be fooled into paying more for a feature you can’t legally use. Flying to Close To The Sun
Aerodromes are extremely secure locations, so you wouldn’t be surprised to know that even the aerial space around them is locked down securely. Ever since Gatwick was ground to a halt by two drones –which caused over 1000 flights to be cancelled or delayed – airports have become strict no fly zones for drones. The government has imposed a 2 (or 2.5) nautical mile radius cylinder and a series of 5Km rectangular zones from the end of each runway threshold, all of which stretch up to 2000ft above the surface, across every protected aerodrome in the UK. Don’t Forget Your ID!
Anything that isn’t a toy, model aircraft or small drone (under 250g) you must ensure you have a registered Flyer ID & Operator ID. However, if your drone has a camera you must ensure you have an Operator ID. The flyer ID verifies that you have passed a simple flying exam and are confident with safe and legal flying. Your identification number is your operator ID, which must be displayed on your drone or model aircraft. It is against the law to fly a drone or model aircraft without having the required IDs – in the most serious cases, you could be sent to prison. It is essential that you keep your ID safe – its there to protect you and other people.
