What is LiDAR?
LiDAR uses laser light to measure distances with high accuracy. This technology is made possible with the DJI Zenmuse L2 drone and its predecessor, the DJI Zenmuse L1. While LiDAR has long been used in forestry and land surveying, its application in light shows is relatively new.
Applications of LiDAR have included services such as forestry and land surveying for some time, but the purpose of light shows is fairly new to the industry.
Light Shows and Firework Show Planning
Drone Swarm has harnessed LiDAR to enhance the planning and design of drone light shows and fireworks displays. Data from the DJI Zenmuse L2 helps create detailed 3D models for client previews, check audience viewpoints, and manage general site planning.
Drone Swarm has developed a fleet of unmanned aircraft designed and manufactured in-house, aiming to create awe-inspiring drone shows for various audiences. They are the only company in the world to offer lasers, fireworks, and drone displays all in-house.
Do Drone Shows Mean the End of Firework Displays?
LiDAR technology offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional firework displays, reducing stress on animals in the surrounding area. Additionally, it can accurately map out and plan successful fireworks displays.
Drone displays are generally safer for audiences and organisers compared to fireworks. In 2022, an estimated 10,200 firework-related injuries occurred in the US, with 73% happening around the Fourth of July, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.
However, the cost of drone displays often exceeds that of fireworks due to the advanced software and technology required. Allied Market Research notes that this high value can lead to higher entrance fees for audience members.
The Future of Drone Displays
There is an ongoing debate about whether the novelty of drone displays will eventually wear off.
Some in the industry wonder if drone shows are a fleeting tech trend that will lose their wow factor, or if they represent a revolutionary entertainment piece ready to replace firework displays.
