In 2016 the Civil Aviation Authority worked with industry representatives to investigate the consumer drone sector.

This led to the development of the so called Drone Code.

The Drone Code sets out very clearly and simply the rules and guidelines for flying drones within the law in the UK.

Some of the findings of the CAA’s 2016 review included –

  • The majority of people considering the purchase of a drone planned to use it for recreation. This has changed over the past couple of years in that increasing numbers of people are interested in becoming CAA approved drone pilots and making a living from the industry.

  • Around a third of people knew someone who had a drone. Falling prices and improved technology mean that drone ownership has become even more widespread in 2018,

  • Around a third of people wanted to use a drone for photography or video. Being able to shoot from an aerial view has an obvious attraction. Cameras have improved considerably over the past couple of years, so aerial photography with drones is even more popular.

  • The majority of people surveyed felt that retailers and Government should be responsible for safe use of drones. The Drone Code has helped this.

  • The public had strong views about pilots following the Drone Code but they didn’t believe pilots would face penalties or prosecution if they failed to comply.

Anyone interested in becoming a CAA approved drone pilot must have a good understanding of the Drone Code and legislation applicable to the use of unmanned aircraft.
