Featured Member – Vic Kirby – All Drone Services

Featured Member - Vic Kirby - All Drone Services This month's featured DSR member is Vic Kirby - the first DSR member to be actually featured twice in a newsletter because of his recent contact with Baroness Sugg. He started  his drone business, All Drone Services, in the first quarter of 2018 to run alongside his full time employment in the IT field. However, he's always had flying in his life from more than a decade in the RAF, through to his role as team manager for the NEXXBlades FPV drone racing [...]

Coverdrone – Changing the Drone Insurance Landscape

Coverdrone - Changing the Drone Insurance Landscape Coverdrone, who DSR are proud to partner with, have yet again raised the bar when it comes to responding to the very specific needs faced by drone pilots across the UK. They are changing their policies to reflect the fact that there is no 'one size fits all' policy for the vast range of requirements in the drone industry from the occasional hobbyist through to the high level, flying ever day, commercial operators. Commercial clients can now benefit from receiving Aviation Authority Registration [...]

DSR Major Accounts Initiative

DSR Major Accounts Initiative Drone Safe Register are pleased to announce that we have just begun our initial trials of our major account initiative.  Following a successful pilot, this could represent a significant step forward in leveraging the DSR network's power to deliver across the UK and Ireland. For the first time, companies who have national requirements for aerial photography, videography and thermal imaging will be able to utilise the skill sets of the DSR member pilot network via a dedicated account manager and online administration portal system. This will create a virtual administration [...]

OSC Update

DSR OSC Update Last month, we were thrilled to receive final confirmation by the CAA of our  DSR OSC scheme and work has been continuing behind the scenes now to make this into reality as far as our pilots are concerned. Progress on building our initial team of OSC operators is proceeding well with all interested pilots having now received their formal offer and being in the process of replying. By early New Year we should be in a position to confirm a venue and proposed dates for training so we can find out the best fit [...]

DSR and Baroness Sugg

DSR and Baroness Sugg Baroness Sugg was appointment as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport on 27 October 2017. Under her stewardship, this year, drone law has changed to introduce the height ceiling of 400 ft on all drone flights and flight restrictions on within 1km from airports. All of this was in response to an increase in numbers of near misses reported between drones and aircraft and a growing public concern for air passenger safety. DSR obviously recognise the enormous potential that the drone [...]

A Word from Mark Boyt – It’s a Wrap for 2018!

A Word from Mark Boyt - It's a Wrap for 2018! This newsletter was already in production when the news broke of an illegal drone operator bringing Gatwick airport to a standstill.  As well as the misery caused to all of those who had their travel plans interrupted, I'm sure that this will have repercussions for our industry as a whole.  Of course, most people would acknowledge that the operator or operators were working way outside of any legal framework but it is likely that their actions will have consequences of some sort for both [...]

What to Expect when You’re Inspected

What to Expect when You’re Inspected The 2018 announcement that the CAA have begun to conduct inspections of licensed drone pilots has traditionally been something of a thorny issue amongst the pilot community. The fact that even general information on the inspection process is conspicuous by its absence on the CAA website and a generalised fear of unannounced inspections by authority figures has combined to make this seem like a dark process designed to hunt down the slightest flaw and levy punishment against the unsuspecting pilot.  It’s refreshing therefore [...]
